Pickleball’s rapid growth over the past three years has brought both excitement and challenges to the sport. At its core, pickleball was designed as a balanced game where power and control coexist, allowing for strategic play and an enjoyable experience for players of all skill levels. However, recent advances in paddle manufacturing—primarily from overseas—have shifted this balance, threatening the integrity of the game.
Traditionally, a skilled control player could neutralize a power player with precise shot placement, while a strategic power player could outmaneuver a control player. This dynamic created a game that attracted millions. However, newer paddle technologies have dramatically increased ball speed, making it difficult for many players to react in time. With players stationed just 14 feet apart, these ultra-powerful paddles increase the risk of injury and diminish the strategic elements that have defined pickleball.
The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA), the sport’s governing body, has responded by tightening equipment regulations. Through advanced lab testing, USAPA has set maximum standards for paddle speed, spin, and deflection. However, paddle manufacturers continue to push the limits, developing equipment that skirts the rules while maintaining excessive power.
While USAPA lab testing is essential, it has a critical flaw: paddles that pass initial certification can deteriorate with use, leading to increased ball speed over time. This phenomenon, which we call “aging to benefit,” occurs when paddle materials degrade, creating a trampoline effect that amplifies ball velocity. Some of the common causes include:
Delamination – The outer skin of the paddle separates, increasing bounce.
Surface Separation – The face of the paddle loosens from the core, altering playability.
Core Crush – Repeated impact weakens the internal structure, boosting ball speed.
These changes can occur naturally or, in some cases, be intentionally manipulated by players seeking an advantage. The prevalence of these issues has prompted discussions about mandatory paddle testing before professional matches and increased recommendations for eye protection due to the rising number of high-speed ball impacts.
Despite these concerns, there has been no reliable way to test paddles outside of laboratory conditions—until now. Pickleball Instruments** has developed an innovative, portable deflection testing device** that allows clubs, tournament directors, and retailers to verify paddle integrity on-site. This ensures that paddles continue to meet original manufacturer specifications, even after extensive play.
Our deflection testing device is easy to use and provides immediate, accurate results. Clubs and tournament organizers can implement on-site paddle testing by applying a certification sticker to paddles that pass inspection. This ensures fairness and safety for all competitors. Additionally, pro shops can test new paddles at the point of sale, allowing players to monitor performance over time and replace paddles when deflection exceeds allowable limits.
Pickleball Instruments** is not stopping with deflection testing. We are also developing:
Coefficient of Restitution (COR) Testing – Measures ball speed off the paddle to ensure compliance with USAPA standards.
Spin Testing – Evaluates paddle surface texture to prevent excessive spin advantages. All of our instruments are designed to be portable, affordable, and user-friendly, making field testing accessible to clubs, retailers, and tournament organizers nationwide.
Beyond immediate testing, our instruments feature embedded electronics that generate a QR code linked to a paddle’s performance data. Players will be able to track how their paddle changes over time based on factors such as play frequency and skill level. Manufacturers can use this data to improve paddle longevity and ensure compliance before shipping to customers.
Field testing is a common practice in many sports, and pickleball should be no exception. As the game evolves, ensuring a level playing field is crucial for its continued growth and integrity. Players invest significant time and money in tournaments, and they deserve to compete in an environment where equipment performance is fair and regulated.
With Pickleball Instruments’ solutions, clubs, retailers, and governing bodies now have the tools needed to maintain fairness and safety in the sport. It’s time to implement field testing and protect the game we all love.
