Pickleball Instruments and USA Pickleball (USAP) have begun implementation of a new Field-Testing Program designed to promote fairness, transparency, and equipment compliance across competitive play. The program utilizes Pickleball Instruments’ advanced Deflection Testing Machine and Coefficient of Friction Testing Machine, deployed on-site at USA Pickleball Golden Ticket tournaments.
The program introduces portable field-testing instruments and a companion data platform, Paddle DNA, which securely records and tracks test results. Together, these tools bring greater consistency and confidence to paddle compliance verification at competitive tournaments.
As pickleball continues its rapid growth, concerns surrounding paddle performance, delamination, disbonding, and compliance with governing body standards have become increasingly prominent. Historically, comprehensive paddle testing has been confined to laboratory environments, limiting real-time verification during live competition.
Pickleball Instruments’ field-testing system addresses this challenge by enabling tournament officials to evaluate key paddle characteristics directly on-site. Initial testing includes measurements related to surface friction and deflection properties. All results are logged through Paddle DNA, creating a reliable digital record accessible to event officials and players.
“Our goal was to create a practical and trusted way to bring professional-level paddle testing into real competition environments,” said Aria Shahmirzadi, Communications Director of Pickleball Instruments. “By combining purpose-built instruments with Paddle DNA, we’re helping ensure fairness while giving players confidence that the equipment on court meets established standards.”
The system was successfully implemented across amateur divisions at the first USA Pickleball Golden Ticket of the 2026 season, with plans for continued use throughout upcoming Golden Ticket tournaments and the USA Pickleball National Championship.
“This ensures a fair and even playing field for our players at Golden Ticket events,” said Riley Burgess, Vice President of Equipment Compliance at USA Pickleball. “Players can step onto the court knowing their paddle is compliant and that they are competing against compliant equipment.”
The testing process is designed to be efficient, typically requiring less than five minutes per paddle, with optional pre-testing available to minimize disruption during tournament play.
Looking ahead, Pickleball Instruments plans to expand availability of its field-testing technology beyond national tournaments to clubs, competitive venues, manufacturers, and other sanctioned events seeking consistent and transparent paddle verification.
